Definition - What does Vestibular System mean?
Human's sense of balance or equilibrium is maintained by receiving information from their environment through their vestibular system. The vestibular system primarily helps individuals to maintain balance and keep from falling over whether they are standing, walking or running.
One of the primary components of the vestibular system is the fluid-filled canals located in the inner ear which coordinates information between the inner ears, the eyes, muscles, joints, hands, feet and jaws. These canals and the whole of the vestibular system allow individuals to stand upright, to maintain balance and give orientation for coordination. If the vestibular system malfunctions, individuals can suffer from panic attacks, drifting, falling, dizziness, nausea and teeth grinding.
