There has always been a criticism that celebrities tend to avoid harsh punishments for crimes, consider Lindsay Lohan who has managed to avoid significant jail time despite a string of illegal activity. Now we have Bobby Brown.
The AP reports that Bobby Brown, who had been convicted of his second DUI in a year, has left the Los Angeles County jail after serving only nine hours of a 55 day sentence. He was taken into custody on Wednesday but was freed from the Van Nuys, California, facility ten hours later.
Bobby Brown has been given the opportunity to leave jail by agreeing to serve the remainder of his sentence at home with an electronic monitor bracelet. The decision was made by a Los Angeles County probation officer. Los Angeles County Sheriff’s spokesman Steve Whitmore made the announcement yesterday and suggested the singer is “technically still in custody and under the control of the probation department.”
“He is presently home with family,” his lawyer, Christopher Brown, said Thursday. “Mr. Brown has accepted responsibility for what occurred last October 2012. Mr. Brown is pleased that the matter has been resolved and to be home with this wife and young son.”
Brown will be allowed to remove the bracelet after eight days. The court argues that this is the amount of time he would have remained in jail. The state has allowed many inmates to leave county jails early due to jail overcrowding and good behavior.
Bobby Brown Arrested a second time for DUI in California
Bobby Brown had been arrested for a second drunk driving offense but pleaded no contest. He was also charged with driving with a suspended license and violating his probation, charges which stemmed from an earlier DUI conviction last year. As part of the penalties assessed after his first DUI he was admitted to a confidential rehabilitation center last August.
His second drunk driving arrest occurred in October of last year after a traffic stop on Ventura Boulevard. According to police they noticed “a strong scent of alcohol” when approaching Brown.
Bobby Brown, rapper, singer, songwriter and dancer, has been famous since his start on New Edition back in the 80’s. He broke from the band to start his own solo career and had success with his own music. Brown had a string of top ten hits from 1986 and 1992, and is a recipient of a Grammy Award.
More recently he was famous for his marriage to Whitney Houston, who died a little more than a year ago. Brown and Houston divorced in 2007, but they have a daughter named Bobbi Kristina. He has three other children.
Not only are the celebrities terrible examples for the legions of fans that follow them, they also seem to prove that with the right lawyer and enough money it’s easy to avoid the most severe criminal penalties for their unlawful behavior.
