CNN reports that Josh Brent, Dallas Cowboys nose tackle, was arrested shortly after 2 a.m. Saturday morning in Irving, Texas, on suspicion of intoxication manslaughter one day before Dallas was scheduled to play the Cincinnati Bengals.
The two players were allegedly finishing up a night of partying at Club Privae in Dallas, Texas. The fatal accident occurred near the 1400 block of John Carpenter Freeway. Brent flipped his Mercedes Benz, and according to Irving police, the accident caused the death of fellow Cowboys player Jerry Brown Jr.
Police suspect that Brent’s car was speeding at a very high rate when it “hit a curb, travelled approximately 900 feet, flipped and caught fire.” Officers at the scene noted that that they suspect that alcohol “was a contributing factor” in the deadly crash.
Officers also noted that Josh Brent was asked to take a field sobriety test at the scene. Based on the officer’s observations and information given by Josh Brent at the scene they are convinced he was intoxicated. Brent was also required to submit to a mandatory blood test at the hospital after it was confirmed that Brown had died.
After the accident police officers arrived at the scene and found Josh Brent had removed Brown, 25, from the burning car. Jerry Brown, Jr. was taken to an Irving hospital but was later pronounced dead.
Jerry Jones the Dallas Cowboys owner said, “The team was deeply saddened by the news of the accident and the passing of Jerry Brown. At this time, our hearts and prayers and deepest sympathies are with the members of Jerry’s family and all of those who knew him and loved him,” he said in a statement.
After the deadly accident Brent was booked into the Irving City Jail on charges of intoxication manslaughter. If he is convicted he will face second degree felony manslaughter charges which means Brent could face two to twenty years in prison and a fine of $10,000.
Jerry Brown Jr. was a free agent with the Indianapolis Colts this season but recently joined the Cowboys’ practice squad. Josh Brent and Jerry Brown Jr. have been friends since they played together at the University of Illinois.
Josh Brent, 24, has been with the Dallas Cowboys for three seasons. Josh Brent started his football career at the University of Illinois, coming to the Cowboys in 2010. He was scheduled to start against the Bengals Sunday afternoon taking over for an injured Jay Ratliff.
Jerry Brown is the second pro football player to die in one week after Kansas City Chiefs linebacker Javon Belcher murdered his girlfriend and later committed suicide outside Arrowhead Stadium while team personnel looked on.
