Not only is Jon “Bones” Jones one of the UFC’s biggest pay-per-view stars with an unusually clean image, he has also increased the status of the UFC sport with lucrative endorsement deals and a public profile rivaling celebrity status with appearances on shows such as The Tonight Show.
But early Saturday morning Jon “Bones” Jones received some unwanted attention when he was arrested and charged with drunk driving. Police have stated that they sent a unit to the scene of a one car drunk driving accident early Saturday in New York when Jones hit a utility pole while driving his Bentley. The Broome County Sherriff’s department took Jones into custody under suspicion of drunk driving. Jon “Bones” Jones was not detained but released to his family after his mother posted bail for him.
He is scheduled to appear in DUI court at a later date. No details of the DUI accident were available, and the police were silent about whether he was transporting other passengers in his car at the time of his DUI arrest.
Jones’ manager confirmed reports of the DUI arrest but failed to provide any additional details. Malki Kawa, Jones’ manager stated, “While the facts of this situation are still being gathered and situated, Round Management fully supports Jon, and we are asking for fans and media to respect the privacy of Jon and his family during this time.” Jones and his family also refused to comment on the drunk driving arrest, although reports indicate that the accident did not cause any drunk driving injuries to Jones or any other passengers or bystanders.
Jones is scheduled to fight his next fight on September 1, 2012, against Dan Henderson in Las Vegas. Henderson is a veteran fighter, but he may have his hands full against Jon “Bones” Jones who is one of the biggest stars in the mixed martial arts arena at this time. Crowds love him for his clean image, his incredible athleticism and his techniques, most notably his recent third-round stoppage of Mauricio “Shogun” Rua in March 2011 when he won the UFC light heavyweight title. He has also had success defending his title three times against other UFC fighters.
Jones also has famous family members. New York Patriot’s player Chandler Jones, who starred at Syracuse last season and Baltimore defensive lineman Arthur Jones
