Memorial Day Weekend and Drunk Driving EnforcementDrunk driving enforcement efforts will be increased this Memorial Day weekend to limit and reduce the number of drunk driving injuries and fatalities. Memorial Day weekend is considered the start of the summer season which means a higher number of high school graduates and college-aged young adults will take to the roadways. Californias Driver task forces has issued some reminders for the holiday weekend. The first and most important suggestion is if you are going to drunk, designate a sober driver. The California Highway Patrol has issued alerts that they will establish DUI checkpoints within Humboldt County and special DUI Saturation Patrols throughout the county. Not only will there be heightened DUI checkpoints over Memorial Day Weekend there will also be additional officers deployed on freeways and county roads as part of their Maximum Enforcement Period.
Suggestions from the California Highway Patrol
- The most important first step is to plan ahead. Designate someone to drive. Make sure you and your family and friends get home safely from any Memorial Day weekend gatherings.
- If you are hosting a party be aware of how many drinks your guests are consuming and limit the number to no more than one or two drinks per hour.
- Provide non-alcoholic drinks for the designated driver. There are a variety of websites which offer drink recipes.
- Limit the amount of drinks you bring to someone elses party and make sure you always eat while you drink.
