The Atlanta Journal Constitution reports an 8-month-old baby riding in an improperly installed car seat was killed late Saturday in an apparently drug-related, head-on crash in Smyrna. According to police, the father of the child, Darren Curry, was operating the vehicle at the time of the crash and has been charged with vehicular homicide.
The baby was not the only child in the car, according to reports, Darren Curry also had two additional children with him at the time of the DUI arrest, a 3-year-old and a 7-year-old. Both of the children were also injured in the wreck, but according to Ed Cason, a spokesman for the Smyrna police, they are expected to recover. The 3 year old was taken to WellStar Kennestone Hospital in Marietta for abdominal injuries and had surgery.
Three other adults were also injured in the collision, including Darren Curry, the driver, who was taken to the hospital with the mother of the child, Wykenia Harris, 29, who was killed in the accident, along with another driver.
Darren Curry fails to restrain child properly
The car accident occurred on Windy Hill Road at South Cobb Drive at 11 p.m. last night. The car was driven by Darren Curry, 31. According to the Atlanta Journal Constitution, he apparently crossed over the eastbound lanes and collided head-on with another vehicle, driven by Jose Diaz of Marietta.
Unfortunately, not only was Darren Curry driving under the influence of drugs, he also failed to restrain the children in proper safety restraints. Curry, who lives in Cobb County, reportedly is the father of the deceased child and maybe one of the other children, but no more information about the children has been released at this time.
Darren Curry has been charged with driving under the influence of drugs, vehicular homicide and additional injuries are pending.
The story of Curry follows another devastating DUI story from earlier in February when another driver in Southern California was arrested for DUI after they drove the wrong direction on a California freeway causing a pre-dawn crash with multiple vehicles. This accident left six people dead.
The police arrested a 21-year-old female driver on suspicion of felony driving under the influence and felony manslaughter. The accident occurred in the early morning hours on the westbound Pomona freeway. The driver was taken to the hospital with a broken femur and a ruptured bladder and was declared to be in serious condition.
Several people died at the scene of the accident when they were ejected from their vehicles. The woman apparently was driving east in a red Chevy Camaro when it collided head-on with a red Ford Explorer. According to reports, four people were pronounced dead at the scene, and two people died at an area hospital. This accident was described as horrific by those on the scene.
According to experts, this accident, along recent one, are tragedies which are 100 percent preventable.
