Tolerance

« Back to Glossary

Definition of Tolerance

Consuming alcohol can impact a variety of mental and physical behaviors and interfere with bodily functions. Common side effects of high alcohol consumption may include organ damage, alcoholism, toxicity to other medications and physical impairment to complete tasks such as driving.

Drinking alcohol in large quantities on a continual basis however, will allow a drinker to develop tolerance against the effects of alcohol. If a drinker has developed "tolerance" to alcohol they will have to drink more alcohol to produce the same effect.

Scientists have identified several types of tolerance including functional tolerance or the ability to compensate for severe deterioration of bodily functions, acute tolerance, metabolic tolerance, learned tolerance and environment dependent tolerance.
