Definition of Sentence to Service (sts)
In some states judges may agree to have the defendant in a DUI case perform community service in exchange for a reduced jail sentence or fines. Community service options vary but may include picking up trash, speaking to others about the penalties and the dangers of intoxicated driving or performing service to a charity of the driver's choice. Options may be limited for offenders who have multiple DUI convictions.
Sentence to service allows drivers to give back to society and potentially influence others to make better choices. The number of service hours which must be completed may vary depending on the driver's prior arrest record, their blood alcohol concentration at the time of their arrest, whether they caused injury to another person or whether a child was in the car at the time of their DUI arrest.
