Definition of Oscillate

Oscillation occurs as the eye moves back and forth between two constant points. This is a common occurrence with increased intoxication levels as drinkers experience increased nystagmus (a condition in which the eye involuntarily moves). Law enforcement officers can measure the level of oscillation with a common field sobriety test called the horizontal gaze nystagmus or HGN test.
