Nystagmus is the natural and involuntary movement or jerking in the eye. Involuntary rapid movements may be up and down (vertical nystagmus), side to side (horizontal nystagmus) or rotary. There are approximately 47 different types of nystagmus that occur for a variety of reasons. Natural nystagmus occurs in approximately 2 to 4% of the population and does not appear to be caused by vestibular, physiological or neurological disturbances.
