Nystagmus is the involuntary movement of the eyes. It includes both eyes and may be harmless, or it may be an indication of more severe underlying health issue. Jerk nystagmus is one of many different types and is considered a slow drift of the eyes in one direction, with a rapid recovery in the other direction. Most individuals who have jerk nystagmus developed the condition in childhood or through trauma or disease.
Jerk nystagmus frequently is the result of inner ear issues and may be common in individuals who have Meniere's disease. Sometimes this condition is temporary and may be accompanied by nausea and vertigo. Nystagmus generally improves as an individual ages but may be exacerbated by stress, fatigue or consuming alcohol.
