Definition of Caloric Nystagmus

Nystagmus is the involuntary movement of the eyes. It most often includes both eyes. It can be harmless or an indication of a more serious underlying problem. There are several different types of nystagmus that can sometimes be used to explain why a person may have failed a field sobriety test. Caloric nystagmus is brought on by labyrinthine stimulation or irrigation of cold or warm water into the ear canal.
