Blood or breath alcohol concentration or BAC is the level of alcohol in the bloodstream or breath of a drinker. Blood alcohol concentration is expressed as the weight of ethanol, measured in grams, in 100 milliliters of blood, or 210 liters of breath. BAC can also be measured through urine tests.
It is illegal in every state to drive with a blood alcohol concentration above the legal limit for that state. Drivers are also prohibited from legally operating a motorized vehicle if they have consumed alcohol or drugs and have physical or mental impairments which make it impossible to drive safely, regardless of the driver's blood alcohol concentration.
Drivers who wish to instantly compute their blood/breath alcohol concentration may be able to generate an estimate with a BAC or blood alcohol concentration calculator. BAC calculators must be used carefully, and it is important to understand that no calculator is 100% accurate. BAC calculators are, however, a good starting guide to help a drinker understand their intoxication level and whether or not it is safe for them to drive.
A driver's actual blood alcohol concentration is affected by many complex factors including: sex, metabolism rates, body composition, health, foods recently ingested, liquids recently ingested, medications, whether additional drugs have been taken, and the elapsed time since the driver has last eaten.
