Blood Alcohol Concentration (bac)

« Back to Glossary

Definition - What does Blood Alcohol Concentration (bac) mean?

Blood alcohol concentration, which is also referred to as BAC or blood alcohol content, is the concentration of alcohol in the blood of an individual. The BAC is measured as weight per unit of volume. The blood alcohol concentration of an individual can be influenced by their body weight, the rate of absorption of the alcohol, the quantity which was ingested and the individual's metabolism.

BAC is generally discussed in percentages such as 0.10% which would mean that one-tenth of the person's blood in question is alcohol. Currently all states consider it illegal to operate a motorized vehicle with a blood alcohol concentration of 0.08% or higher. At this blood concentration level it has been proven that the cognitive functioning of drivers and the driver's ability to process information is significantly diminished leading to increased injury and death from car accidents.

State's penalties for DWI (driving while intoxicated) or DUI (driving under the influence) convictions can vary but can include mandatory temporary or permanent license revocation, high penalties and fines, mandatory attendance of an alcohol or drug treatment classes, or mandatory installation of an Ignition Interlock Device.
